First Financing Contracts Under the EEA Grants 2009-2014 Programme "NGO fund" Signed

On July 16, 2013 the signing of the first financing contracts under the EEA Grants 2009-2014 programme "NGO fund" took place at the premises of the Society Integration Foundation. First five projects of a hundred projects are about to commence implementation of ideas for better Latvia. Projects are envisaged in the areas of NGO activity support, social sector, development of cohesive society and for support of development of sustainable civil society.

H.E. Jan Grevstad, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kingdom of Norway to the Republic of Latvia adressed project promoters with a brief speech. Ms. Aija Bauere, the director of the secretariat of the Society Integration Foundation also presented the achieved results of the programme implementation so far.

SIF Council had approved 99 projects altogether of more than 350 submitted project applications. At the beginning of 2013, implementation of a Pre-defined project "Support to sustainable civil society development and improvement of the monitoring system in Latvia" was also started.

Kurzeme non-governmental organization support center has intended to establish Kurzeme region NGO sector information network, as well as to ensure representation of NGOs in policy planning.

Liepaja Society of the Blind has envisioned to become a positive role model for other NGOs in the field of good governance and transparency by motivating other NGOs dealing with handicapped people to actively defend and represent interests of their target group.

Latvian Fund for Nature will be striving to achieve a better working environment for NGOs that deal with environmental issues, also envisaging participation of environmental NGOs at international processes, and ensuring public awareness of environmental NGOs.

Aglona county association "Neaizmirstule" ("Forget-me-not") has planned to involve children, youngsters and families with schildren in activities pertaining to creativity and acquisition of social skills, thus reducing risk of social exclusion in Aglona county.

Children and Adolescent Diabetes Association of Latvia plans to expand the availability of information about diabetes to young people, as well as plan to organize educational summer workshops for children and youth with diabetes in order to reduce the risk of social exclusion.

Programme "NGO fund" comprises two sub-programmes: "NGO Activity Support Measure" and "NGO Project Measure" and a pre-defined project. Programme launch event took place on November 14, 2012. Open calls for proposals in both sub-programmes were announced by the Society Integration Foundation on November 27, 2012.

Programme "NGO fund", operated by the Society Integration Foundation, continues to contribute to development of civil society in Latvia. EEA Grants funding in the amount of 9.678 million euros is envisaged for support of operation of non-governmental organizations, for projects in social sector, for development of cohesive society, and for support of development of sustainable civil society.
