The Launch of the Programme "Research and Scholarships"

The opening event of the EEA and Norway Grants programme "Research and Scholarships" was held on April 26, 2013. At the event there was a possibility to find out about the planned support within the programme for the students, teaching staff of all levels of higher education, for the employees of higher educational institutions, as well as about the support for research.

The event was opened by Ms Turid Kristin Lilleng, the First Secretary of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway in Riga, Ms Lauma Sika, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science and Head of the Department of Structural Funds and International Financial Instruments, Ms Diana Rancane, Head of the EU Funds Monitoring Department of the Ministry of Finance, Ms Dita Traidas, Director of the State Education Development Agency.

The participants had a possibility to listen to the stories about the experience of the participants of the previous programme period, for example, Ms Baiba Rosicka went to Iceland in her student days. She pointed out that due to this visit she has acquired valuable experience and a broader view of things, in addition, this experience now helps also in her work environment. However, Ms Zanna Martinsone went to Norway, where she was studying air quality in inner rooms and its influence on employees.

Then Ms Gunta Araja, Deputy Head in Financial Matters of the Department of Structural Funds and International Financial Instruments of the Ministry of Education and Science, provided more detailed information on the conditions for the implementation of the programme.

The objective of the programme is to improve the basis of human resources and knowledge in beneficiary states (the development of knowledge based on education and research, facilitating the mobility of students and the employees of higher educational institution and facilitating bilateral cooperation in research and partnership between Latvia and Donor States). The programme is managed by the Ministry of Education and Science, and the functions of agency are performed by the State Education Development Agency.

At the end of the conference the participants had a possibility to listen to the presentations prepared by the representatives of Donor States: the representative of the Research Council of Norway told about research environment in Norway, the representative of the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education told about the synergy between research and scholarships, however the representatives of Lichtenstein and Iceland informed about the study possibilities in both countries.
