The EEA and Norway grants (Grants) launching event was held on 3rd of October in Riga during this year’s “Norwegian Days” and was jointly organized by Norwegian Embassy in Riga and the Focal Point for the Grants in Latvia - Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Latvia.

The conference was opened by Minister of Finance Mr Andris Vilks and Ambassador of Norway to Latvia Mr Jan Grevstad.

For the period 2009-2014, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway will provide net €67,4 million to eight programs in Latvia. Environmental protection and adaptation to climate change, cultural heritage, support for the justice sector and civil society feature as key priorities.

The Ministry of Finance presented general information about the opportunities of the programmes co-financed by the grants. It was followed by presentations of thematic programs by each of different program operators - Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Economics, Ministry of Education and Science, Society Integration Foundation, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development.

Complementing the core idea of contribution to reducing disparities in Europe, the Grants are now increasingly being focused on strengthening cooperation between the donor and beneficiary states. During the launch event, two seminars on Green Industry Innovation and the Global Fund for Decent Work and Tripartite Cooperation were organized to promote the bilateral opportunities. A high number of bilateral partnerships are expected - within the areas of green industry innovation and cultural exchange, in particular.

The official part of the launch event held at the Latvian Academy of Music in Riga was enriched by a jazz concert by Hank Mobley Tribute Band formed by six Latvian-Norwegian musicians. The Ministry of Finance was pleased about the good attendance of the launch event.
